Yup. I have been reading about this for the last year, with little to no updates till a month ago, when it was announced that it would be shot in Toronto starting in March. I keep hearing its a prequel or a sequel, but not a straight ahead remake.

Either way, its not going to have Ennio Morricone's bom-bom synth pulse soundtrack, Kurt Russell, Keith David or John Carpenter. No sale. I know I will end up seeing it out of curiousity, but you can't make a better version of a movie that is almost perfect, and The Thing is close. Its definitely the best sci-fi/horror/suspense movie I've ever seen. Alien has prettier cinematography and set design, but The Thing trumps any of that with pure visceral tension.

There's a Videodrome remake coming soon too. A Nightmare on Elm Street redux is out in April and has John Connor from Sarah Connor Chronicles as the lead. It would seem remakes/reboots of 80s horror/sci-fi is the hot horse to felch in Hollywood right now.

The only 80s reboot I am looking forward to is the new Predator that is coming out July 7th, and thats only because Robert Rodriguez is producing and writing, and the guy who directed that really good foreign subway chase movie Kontroll is directing. I can't be blinded by fanboy-ness after lying to myself and ever pretending those either of those Alien Vs Predator movies could have been anything but shitfests.

I'm going to pretend this movie doesn't exist. As stated earlier, no need to mess with perfection.

Yet another pointless remake. I agree with Sean about the up coming Predator movie.  There is also a Total Recall remake in the works which makes me die a little inside.
Fucking knife!

"Clash of the Titans" is one of those movies that could be remade. It wasn't perfect.

Really? I think it's going to be absolutely awful. Predator was a fantastic Action/Sci-Fi film. It was not a Horror/Camp film. Okay, there were a few corny one-liners but for the most part it takes itself very seriously. Rodriguez's films, aside from the El Mariachi series, are generally over-the-top campy horror films or ridiculous childrens films known for having THE WORST CCI possible. It's clear from the stereotypical characters and retarded plot (the Predators abduct people and bring them to their planet to hunt them?!) that Rodriguez doesn't "get" what Predator is about. I can only hope that Ridley Scott treats the Alien franchise better than this but honestly it seems almost impossible to make a good sequel unless you're James Cameron.

son of a bitch.

here's some more crap news: the terminator franchise was bought...by a hedge fund.

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the Halcyon Holding Corp. has sold the Terminator rights! But it wasn't sold to either studio bidders, Sony Pictures or Lionsgate, it ended up in the hands of a Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor, who picked it up for $29.5 million. What's most interesting about this sale is the fact that this is the same company that forced Halcyon into bankruptcy, and Halcyon had accused the company of extortion, bribery, and fraud and demanded $30M in damages.

Lionsgate went in with a very positive attitude that they were going to put up a good fight, and apparently Sony Pictures Entertainment's president of worldwide affairs Peter Schlessel stormed out of the meeting because he was so pissed.

So here are the deals details.

Halcyon will receive $5 million for every Terminator movie made from now on, as well as retains the revenue streams from the third and fourth Terminator movies. An arrangement also was made that the sale now wipes out the debt Halcyon owed to Pacificor and all the other i fucked my uncle yesterdayors.

At this point it's unclear what will happen with the Terminator franchise, but I don't think we'll be seeing another movie made any time soon.

There's a Videodrome remake coming soon too.

+1 for the word filters.
I remember way back then when
Everything was true and when
We would have such a very good time
Such a fine time
Such a happy time
And I remember how we'd play
Simply waste the day away
Then we'd say
Nothing would come between us
Two dreamers

On the topic of Predators and Robert Rodriguez, that guy's one of my big inspirations, so I have nothing but respect for the guy. Financing your first movie with money you got from being a government test subject... thats fucking commitment. His autobiography "Rebel Without a Crew" is one of my favorite books, was really a big influence on me when I was a pre-teen and all into making movies.

I'm down with the Predator home planet setting. That was one of the only high points of AvP Requiem, those 30 seconds on the Predator planet. Either way, this new Predator has got better people with more experience at the helm of it than the last Terminator.

Plus its got a fairly low budget, so its not such a big gamble for the studio releasing it, so there's going to be a lot more freedom and that definitive hard R rating. I'm sold on Predator enough to buy a ticket. Past that, I will reserve judgment. I just can't get excited for any of my beloved geek franchises after the Termi-debacle.

i was just about to hop in rodriguez's corner. im a big fan, im happy to hear someone whos work i like is doing this. hes got some great shit under his belt. plus its another predator movie, im cool with that. predator 2 wasnt that great to get all worked up over all this anyway. im saddened by the terminator news. ive been slowly running through the sarah connor chronicles since i got seasons two, finally, for christmas, so i have that to occupy me. 2 episodes left, but im watching them with a friend so he has to be present to finish it off. then i have the directors cut of salvation on deck. im excited to see the difference between the pg13 and r versions. did everyone hate salvation? i didnt. there were a few things i didnt like, but far from hating it. im not digging up the old salvation thread to hear you all hate on it all over again. but i thought it was a better depiction of future war than nighttime clips and blue lasers that were our only vision of post judgement day life. though the scc did a good job of that with the flash forward/backward clips

can someone reboot the 90's?
when it's the right doing it, it's "big brother"
when it's the left doing it, it's for our own protection

too bad instead of all these god damned remakes,
they just re-release the movies in theaters.

tell me who wouldn't want to see say Blade Runner or Terminator on the big screen again?

and i don't mean like at select theaters, but EVERYWHERE.

i know it wont work out, not the way you want
but then again, most of these remakes tend to be block-busts.

Running Old movies in modern theaters would be a great way to put butts in seats. I know when Blade Runner got that rerelease a few years back I made a serious effort to go see it and that was in a local repertory theater and not a modern one.

We have a really awesome independent theater that does classics on the big screen here in Chicago. The Music Box. I have seen so many great movies there, its definitely amongst my favorite reasons for moving to Chicago. Just in this past year, I've seen The Thing, Aliens, Big Trouble in Little China and a lot more of my favorites there. Yay, full circle to the start of the topic by talking about The Thing.

There isn't anybody who has responded to this thread and not actually seen The Thing, is there? I mean "seen it", not "think you've seen it". A thread about that movie should not derail so fast. Its serious gold.
